Corund ceramic plate

Made by the Varga family in Corund Village, Harghita County. Corund pottery is one of the most popular ceramics in Romania.

The clay is extracted from the Săcădat brook, which runs on the western side of the village. It is ground or kneaded to prevent impurities, until the clay becomes a smooth paste; then it is cut into strips and molded on the potter's wheel. Once molded, the pots are left to dry. Afterwards, the clay pots are immersed in kaolin to obtain the white color, and once again they are dried. Later on, the black ornaments are applied by hand, using a cow horn bugle that has a goose feather on the top, through which the color is dripping.
